FALL MEET 2006 Dick Sargent
This Meet Was Held
Back At Ashokan Field Campus!
We had Dick Sargent as our demonstrator for the weekend.Dick has been smithing for 35 years, starting in a small shop, in Vermont, he worked with Frank Grapes Then in 1973 Dick and partner Tony Millham, started Star Forge in Newport, Rhode Island. For 2 years they produced a prodigious amount of reproduction hardware for period homes sponsored by the Newport Restoration Foundation. Following that experience, Dick started his own shop in VT and sold his hardware through his own catalog.
In the early-90's he also began producing forged elements, as a subcontractor, for other shops (Catalpa Gate Co. in Putney, VT, for one). From 1996 until 2004, Dick was the Shop Forman and Blacksmith for Roslyn Metalcraft, a busy railing shop on Long Island, NY, where he produced railings for stairways and balconies.
For the last 2 years he has been the Blacksmithing Resident at Peters Valley in Layton, NJ, where he manages the teaching program for Peters Valley as well as doing his own work. Dick cites his friendships with Dick Everett and Donald Streeter as major influences in his life and work, as well as being inspired by the historic work of Edgar Brandt. Dick is a classic smith and one of the early progenitors of the blacksmith movement that we have all benefited from.
Dicks demo consister of describing various methods of railing lay out and some forged elements. Dick is an extremely practical smith and his experience and casual manner made this a fun and educational demo.
