2005 Fall Hammer-In
Andrew Dohner

We had an exciting weekend for our Fall Hammer-In. On Friday afternoon, we were invited to visit the Arrowsmith forge shop, in Millbrook, NY. As many of you may know this is Fletcher Coddington’s shop. He and his wife Debra run a large forging and machine shop that produces some great one-of-a-kind pieces as well as a line of steel furniture. Millbrook is not too far from Poughkeepsie and we should have plenty of time for an interesting visit.

Our Demonstrator for the weekend was Andrew Dohner, an energetic demonstrator who has some great ideas, as well as a good technical background. Andy was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, home of Bethlehem Steel, and is continuing a family tradition of working with steel. His interest in forging began during his ten years as an industrial welder and fabricator. Since then he has worked in and visited various shops around the country, giving him a wide range of experience to draw on for his demo. Andy has also been the studio assistant at the Penland School in North Carolina and at Peters Valley in New Jersey. He is a busy smith and teacher so we are very lucky to have him for the weekend.

For his demo Andy forged a variety items demonstrating traditional techniques. At times he was assisted by Tom Ryan as a striker. Andy gave an informative demo Saturday and on Sunday morning he went down to the pavillion to help people try the techniques he demonstrated.
