Spring Hammer In 2011 James Hoffman
April 29, 30 and May 1 2011
The demonstrator for our Spring meeting was James Hoffman. Jymm, as he is known, focuses on the reproduction of historic ironwork for museums and working history sites.
He has a Bachelor's Degree in Museum Studies and has been a full time blacksmith since 1981. He produces a wide range of work, from cooking utensils and fireplace equipment to architectural hardware, lighting devices, and tools. For two years, from March of 1988 to Nov. 1990 he was Interpretive Programs Manager at Old Fort Niagara, Youngstown, New York. Jymm has been listed in several yearly issues of the "200 Best Craftsmen" in Early American Life magazine.
When not working in his shop in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, Jymm participates in historical re-enactments, demonstrating with an authentic reproduction 18th century traveling forge. He has taught at Touchstone in Pennsylvania, as well as numerous demos for other smithing groups.
